For Day 3 of exploring herbs, we would be examining a special herb called Christmas Melon or Tagiri in Yoruba.
Would anyone ever believe that a green and beige coloured herbal plant would ward off viral diseases such as chickenpox and measles in Nigeria by simply placing it under the bed? Well the Southwesterners believed it and it worked for them.
The plant is TAGIRI, called Christmas Melon in English.
It is also used as an organic alternative to synthetic drugs especially antibiotics in poultry farming and has shown to be effective for many years back. Tagiri is one of those organic medicinal plants that is widely used in Nigeria to cure and prevent viral diseases in poultry.
As a child who grew up in the southern part of Nigeria, we used to kick tagiri, (Adenopus breviflorus), ignorant of its medicinal value.
It has a health benefit for both man and livestock, especially poultry, although there isn't a scientific report to back this up.
But this does not weaken the fact of its medicinal potency. This can be attested to by the wide range of people who embraces its use in organic poultry farming for preventing and curing.
