I'm also crazy about Tom brown. Why? You may ask. Well, isn't the name cute, to start with. Lol. Anyway, that's not the reason for my crush. Before you begin to think Tom Brown is one cute, tall, muscled, white guy, let me inform you that Tom Brown is a locally made cereal carefully selected from Nigeria's variety of spices, nuts and grains.
Origin
Tom Brown seem to have originated from the Northeastern part of Nigeria and called Garin kunu in Hausa. It is often used as a way of weaning babies and has been found to be highly nutritious. To combat malnutrition in the nation especially the NorthEast, this awesome cereal has been used by NGOs and the government because of its nutritional value.
This power-packed cereal contains mostly roasted soya beans, groundnut, guinea corn, maize, sorghum, millet, fish powder and local spices. As the popularity of Tom Brown grows, other nutritious grains and spices like rice, ginger, wheat, dates and tigernuts are added to mix to give it different flavours and natural sweetness. Some believe Tom Brown came from "Turn Brown" which is what is expected of the cereal during preparation. That perhaps came from a mispronunciation. Lol.
Benefits
I recently wrote on the importance of eating from a variety of one's locally grown foods because of the health benefits and this is one of the best reasons why Tom Brown should be encouraged.
